_ [Sun Ra] A Quiet Place In The Universe / Sun Ra & His Arkestra
All Music Guideのジャズ関係のレビューはほとんどScott Yanowという評論家が書いているのだが、見たところ日本のジャズ雑誌のようにどんなクズでも誉めるというわけではないし、かといって個人的な嗜好に極端に偏るということもなく、それなりに客観的な態度を保っていて、そこそこ信頼がおけるように思われる。そのYanowをして「おおかたゴミ(largely a waste)」「やめとけ(so skip this one)」とまで言わしめ、輝かしくも1つ星を獲得(ちなみに満点は5つ星です)したのがこの作品である。1つ星なんて滅多に見掛けないので、ある意味勲章と言えよう。
元々後半だけ別のCDに入っていたのだが、1994年、例によってサン・ラー馬鹿にとって愛憎半ばする味方であるLeo Recordsがノーカット完全版を出してくださった。ありがたや。ちなみにジャケはなかなかかっこいい。
録音年代は、All Music Guideでは1976年としているがおそらく1977年初頭が正しい。水面下で出回っている1977年4月29日、ペンシルヴァニア大での音源とメンツがよく似ているからだ。
1曲目は私が知る限りこのライヴでしか演奏していない珍しいバラードで、作曲家としてのサン・ラーがモンクやミンガス、あるいはエリントンといった系譜に直接つながる存在であることを証明する、奇妙で美しい演奏である。このメロディーなどはカバーに耐えうる強度を持っていると思うのだが、誰かやらないものか。
たぶんYanowはこいつを聞いてイヤになったんだろうが、Friendly Galaxy No. 2という曲に乗せてほぼ19分間、サン・ラーが説教するというのが2曲目で、まあこいつは飛ばしたほうがいい。一応どんなものか言葉で説明すると、村祭りのお囃子(フルートがいかにもそれくさい)に乗ってマイク近づけ過ぎの酔っ払いが数名大いに語るというようなもので、聞くだけ人生の無駄である。生で見れば楽しいんだろうが。
あとはフレンチホルン(ヴィンセント・チャンシー)とサン・ラーのデュオあり、普段はバリトンに専念しているパット・パトリックがアルトでしみじみとスタンダードを吹くトラックあり、定番のLove in Outer Spaceあり(ただし打楽器をフィーチャー)という感じで、まさに玉石混淆だが、最後にまた定番のSpace is the placeが来る。これが凄い。なぜか良く分からないがものすごいノリで、シャッフルに近いリズムに乗ってアーケストラ全員が疾走する。
おおこれはすげえ、と喜ぶのもつかのま、3分くらい経つと音が突然揺れて、フェードアウト、おしまい。テープトラブルなんだろうが、そりゃないだろうよおい。
ということで、さすがに「おおかたゴミ」とまでは言わないが、1曲目と6曲目を聞くために2000円払う気合いがある人間にのみお薦めする。まあ、この2曲で十分お釣りが来ると思うが。
