_ [Music] Dog Years In The Forth Ring / Rahsaan Roland Kirk
かけると思わず聴き入ってしまうので全然BGMにならないのだが、この
Dog Years In The Forth Ringは本当に素晴らしい。CD3枚組で、最初の2枚には1964年から1975年までの未発表ライヴ音源からのチョイス、最後の1枚にはAtlantic時代のKirkの作品中最も売れなかったアルバムとして有名なNatural Black Inventions: Root Strataが収録されている。
最初の2枚はGeorge Bonafacioというコレクターが提供したもので、まあ出自としてはブートまがいなのだが音質はそんなに悪くない。1964年ブレーメンでのライヴ(George Gruntzが凄いピアノを弾いている)からの音源が多いが、1963年のものはメンツや音質から判断するにどうやら(Dexter GordonやKenny Dorhamのものに関しては一部がSteepleChaseから出た)デンマーク国営ラジオの音源のようである。ライヴバージョンのI Say A Little Prayerも入っていて大いに期待したのだが、決して悪くはないけれどまあこれはVolunteered Slaveryのバージョンの勝ちでしょう。というかあれが凄すぎるだけかも。
個人的には、残っている音源はそのままの形であるだけ全部出して欲しいのだが、ポップス畑の長いJoel Dornがプロデューサーなだけに、アルバムの冒頭にナレーションを配して見たり、選曲や曲順を工夫したりとトータルアルバムとしての構成にも配慮が見られる。DominoやThree For The Festival、BlacknussといったKirkの定番に加え、Freddie FreeloaderやSister Sadie、MisteriosoといったジャズスタンダードをKirk風の料理で味わえるあたりもうれしい。
で、この2枚はそれはそれでとても素晴らしいのだが、やはり一番凄いのは3枚目で、これは聞くと昏倒する。出た当時はおそろしく売れなかったそうで、まあ今単体で出たところでたぶん売れないと思うが、基本的にKirkが全部一人で演奏している(いくつかの曲にはピアノやパーカッションが参加)という「ソロ・アルバム」なのである。ただし、何せやっているのがKirkなので、何本かの楽器(いくつかはゴムホースなどで自作)を同時に吹くと共に足でハイハットやバスドラを踏みならし、手が空いていればベルを鳴らすといった具合(オーバーダブは一切ない、スタジオライヴらしい)。到底一人でやっているとは思えない。こういう書き方をするとチンドン屋の演芸やある種のフリージャズのようなものを想像されるかもしれないが、フリーにありがちな独りよがりなところも辛気くささもなく、かつ音色の深さと演奏内容の濃さにおいて他に類を見ない傑作だと思う。

およそ理系学問の素養に欠ける人間で、量子力学なんぞ知っているわけもないのだけれど、
量子論の発展史(高林武彦、ちくま学芸文庫)のような「読みもの」は好きでよく読む。「オイラーの贈物」で有名な吉田武がわざわざ原稿の打ち込みからTeX使った組版までやっていて、その労力にまず驚かされるが、確かにそれだけの手間に値する名著である。ある分野に関して全く素養のない人間に、曲がりなりにも関心を持たせることができればその本なり音楽なりは名作だと私は思うのだが、その点理系(に限らないかも知れないが)の啓蒙ものというと、やたら「{理論|数学|その他}の美しさを味わってください」だのなんだのと、一人でよがっているというか、妄想オナニーというか、絶望的なものが多いような気がする(偏見である)。しかし、これだけ明晰にわかりやすく書かれてしまうと、参りましたとしか言いようがない。俺もこういうものが書きたいなあ。
もちろんこんなものを読んでいる場合じゃないのだが。
